When was the last time you checked your Google Business Listing? If you haven’t checked it in some time, check it NOW and then you can come back and read the rest of this article.
Done? Great! When you google your business, more than likely you will find your business listing in a blocked-off square to the right side of your screen. This information can include your address, a map of said address, phone number, a link to your website, and a link to what others have said about your business on Google Reviews. But did you notice a subtle blue button labeled “Suggest an Edit”?
“Suggest an Edit” ???
That’s right, literally anyone in the world with internet access can “Suggest an Edit” on YOUR Google Business Listing, including your competition.
I’ve known quite a few businesses that this exact scenario has taken place.
Some of the suggested edits were removing the website, changing the business operating hours to absurd times, and even changing the phone number to a forwarding number and sending unsuspecting potential customers to a competitor’s business line.
Such shameless acts from competition is nothing new, but not many business owners know such things can happen.
Contacting a Google customer service representative would yield nothing. It’s a nauseating experience that has no solution, because the solution lies within the tech geniuses over at Google – and implementing such a change would affect their platform.
Check your business, and verify that the information is correct. Literally anyone can make a change by “suggesting an edit” and those changes can take effect in as little as 20 minutes, and can take up to 72 hours for the business listing admin to see the changes corrected on Google.
Great Job, Google!
