Wednesday, January 22, The synopsis: "An old man lives in a hut in El Idilio, a village on the Nangaritza River, in the southeast corner of Ecuador. The village is so small, the dentist comes only twice a year, to pull teeth and bring books to the old man— love stories, with gliding gondolas and ardent kisses, the kind that guarantee maximum heartache.

This is a story of the jungle, green hell and Eden; of the Shuar Indians, who know how to live in harmony with it; of the machines and settlers and gold prospectors and gringos who have invaded it.

Nature, out of balance, becomes vengeful and violent. An ocelot stalks the village, and only the old man, who once lived with the Indians and knows the jungle, is able to face the animal. The Old Man Who Read Love Stories

And so begins this masterpiece of storytelling set in the Ecuadorian jungle. Antonio Bolivar is our "old man" who gets his love stories - cheap romance novels - every six months from the visiting dentist. He lives in a small village called El Idilio on the banks of a tributary of the Amazon. The dentist travels by boat to the surrounding villages, setting up his "seat of suffering" on the quayside, where the "must be desperate" locals submit themselves to his particular brand of torture. When Antonio discovers that he can read, he describes it as "the most important discovery of his whole life.

No one knows about his secret obsession except for the visiting dentist, Rubicondo, on whom Antonio relies to provide him with new reading material, and the local servant girl, Josephina, with whom Antonio has been sharing his stories. Antonio and Josephina soon become more than just book buddies, but outside forces quickly interrupt their relationship and the peaceful coexistence between man and nature in the town of El Idilio. After the futile killing of a jaguar's cubs by an illegal hunter, the hunter's body is found dead. Now, the mother jaguar has begun to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting inhabitants of El Idilio, and the only man capable of restoring peace is Antonio. But he must first deal with his own inner demons. Luis Sepúlveda, author of “The Old Man Who Read Love Stories,” dies of coronavirus

Australian director Rolf de Heer's fondness for making films about isolated characters on the fringes of society gets an elegiac work-out in "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories," a gentle and immensely likable adaptation of the novel by Luis Sepulveda. By David Stratton. Filmed entirely on jungle locations in French Guiana, and centered on an engagingly mellow and subtle performance by Richard Dreyfuss, this French-Aussie co-production presents a hefty marketing challenge but could post solid rewards in niche venues before a decent ancillary life where, unfortunately, its spacious visuals will be severely circumscribed. Instead, he presents a character study of a simple man who finds his pleasures in the small things of life.

The tales of difficulties in the shoot are legendary, the difficulty in getting it distributed is the stuff of nightmares Adapted from Luis Sepulveda's short novel the film delves into the magic realism for which South American writing is justifiably famous. Richard Dreyfuss plays Antonio Bolivar, a 60 year old recluse living in a backwater town on the edge of a river. His passion is reading great love stories, something he shares with Josefina, Cathy Tyson , who works for the town's mayor, Timothy Spall , known locally as the Slimy Toad. Antonio's passion is supplied by the visiting dentist, Hugo Weaving , whose qualifications seem to involve more extraction than bridgework. When a jaguar begins killing humans in revenge for the death of her cubs a hunt is organised which means that Antonio has to come face to face with his past and his present.

The old man who read love stories

It accurately reflects my sensibilities as a human being. In the town of El Idilio, buried deep in the jungle on the bank of a small Amazon tributary, lives 60 year old Antonio Bolivar Richard Dreyfuss. Antonio has lived most of his life in the jungle and knows it intimately. A recluse, he has discovered a quiet passion for romantic tales, which he reads with great appetite. He shares this preoccupation with a local servant girl, Josefina Cathy Tyson , and together, through their common interest, they are falling in love. The visiting Dentist Hugo Weaving , a swaggering lothario with questionable medical skills, becomes Antonio's confidant, procuring romantic novels and encouraging Antonio's advances toward Josefina. But all is not tranquil in this remote, uncivilized corner of the world. Outsiders have intruded, killing a jaguar's cubs and upsetting the fragile balance between man and nature. The Old Man Who Read Love Stories (): Luis Sepulveda: Books.

I read this book in August and I really enjoyed it, so I thought it was time I finally made a review for it. So when people start turning dead, and obviously killed by a wild animal, the people ask for his help. But Bolivar is old now, and all he cares about is the book that is waiting for him in his small house. I wanted to talk about this book because I found it was extremely beautiful and poetic.
